Excited for 2025

Have you heard about the changes at Holy Family in the last 18 months?

Our staff have been very busy researching evidence-based approaches to teaching and implementing these into daily classroom practice.

We have implemented the following approaches -

  • Reducing the cognitive load for our students (Cognitive load theory is a vital model for understanding how school students learn)
  • Routines for learning and behaviour
  • Structured literacy
  • Decodable reading books
  • MultiLit (It uses verified tools to identify student knowledge and skill gaps, and then addresses these with direct, systematic, and intensive teaching of the skills)
  • UFLI Foundations (an explicit and systematic program that teaches students the foundational skills necessary for proficient reading)
  • PhOrMeS - Phonology (sound letter relationships), Orthography (spelling patterns), Morphology (parts of meaning), Etymology (work origins) and Semantics (whole-word meanings)
  • Explicit Direct Instruction (research-based instructional practices explored by cognitive and educational researchers. EDI is the delivery of strategically planned lessons that explicitly teach new concepts to mastery)
  • Daily Reviews (Daily review is potent in challenging and developing students knowledge. By frequently pushing students to recall and apply their knowledge, you encourage their minds to convert newly acquired skills into automatic processes. This drastically bolsters your students' ability to grasp future content)
  • Behaviour Curriculum (AERO)

We are excited to be working with Dr Nathaniel Swain in 2025 to continue to acquire teacher knowledge in the craft of writing.
