Secondary School Connections

Strengthening Transitions Through Gardening and Reading

Our primary school has been working closely with our partner secondary school colleagues to support a smooth transition for pupils moving from Year 6 into Year 7. One of the exciting collaborative initiatives this year has been our Gardening and Book Buddies Programs with Avila College. Sharing a boundary fence with Avila College enables this connection to be sustainable.

Our Year 4 students attend 'experience days' at Avila and Salesian Colleges. On these days our students engage with staff and students from the secondary colleges in a range of activities.

Pupils from both schools have come together to share their love of reading and learn new skills in the school garden. This hands-on experience has helped to:

  • Build relationships between students across age groups

  • Provide a calming, purposeful space for shared learning

  • Foster a sense of community and continuity during the transition process

The older students have taken on mentoring roles, guiding the younger pupils in both gardening tasks and reading activities. This partnership has not only enhanced pupils' confidence but also created a strong link between our schools that supports a smoother and more connected transition experience.

We look forward to continuing these partnerships and exploring more creative ways to support our pupils' development and wellbeing.

Holy Family Primary School, Avila and Salesian Colleges form the hub of exemplary Catholic education in the City of Monash.
